The Hypocrisy of Ron Guenther

Ok, Ron is 62 now. If he agrees to the proposed extension of his contract with Illinois, he will be 65 at the end of 2010 when the contract expires. Yet Ron had no hesitation shoving Lou Henson, Jim Turpin or Jim Shepard out the door for being too old. What a joke!

First of all, with all due respect to Jim Turpin and Jim Sheppard, neither did a good job, and while I can't speak to Sheppard's replacement (a position that doesn't impact anyting), Turpin's replacement was a significant upgrade regardless of age.

As for Lou, I loved him and would like to see a building named after him, but from a fan's perspective, it was time for him to go and it had nothing to do with age. His replacement was an upgrade on every level related to coaching.

As for Guenther, his bosses have chosen to extend his tenure, again I assume regardless of age.

He hires a football coach who WOULDN'T recruit, and gives him a long-term extension. He doesn't lock-in the basketball coach and hires a replacement who CAN'T recruit. He sells out Memorial Stadium by closing 20,000 seats. Give him a lifetime contract!

So the basketball coach who can't recruit now has 3 top-100 guys for th 2009 class. He certainly had a setback for the 07/08 classes, but it happens, but lets awknowledge that he is picking up the pace.
