A University President Who Understands The Value of Winning

The Guenther apologists always point the blame at the UI Adminstration for not being committed to having winning sports teams.

Winning sports teams=more $$$ for the athletic department and more $$$ for the university as a whole. Thankfully, that loser Joe White is leaving. Interim President Stan Ikenberry understands winning, we had solid football & men's basketball programs under his watch. I only hope the new president reads this article.

Too many ivory tower academicians forget that the athletic program is the best marketing program the university has. Name me another University department that has as much television exposure across the country. When Illinois was on its basketball run in 2005, the university was front-page news across the country.

Even someone like Stephen Kaufmann (he of anti-Chief rhetoric) realized that the athletic program carried great exposure. That's why he wrote letters to prospective student-athletes about the Chief. Even though his premise was dead wrong, he realized he would get maximum exposure through the athletic department. Hopefully, the new full-time president and chancellor recognize the same thing.

Sounds an awfull lot like you're making the point that it's not Guenther fault that the football program has been a loser.
