Moving Student to North End Zone-Brilliant!

In another brilliant move by the DIA, students in Block I are now going to be seated in the new North End Zone instead of the 40 yard line as has been the tradition since 1924. What a joke! So now instead of being able to see Block I on television and having students harass the opposing team from behind the bench, the students won't be seen on tv.

1) Why is the DIA giving University of Illinois students the worst seats in the stadium?
2) Why are visiting fans presumably getting better seats than the student body?
3) How will a set of bleachers going to be able to hold the entire student demand for tickets?
4) How will this create a unified student section if Illinois actually starts winning and 10,000 students will want to show up per game?
5) Moving the students from right behind the opposing bench, to an isolated corner of the stadium and 15' off the ground (because of the ridiculous glass rooms at field level in the horseshoe) is a horrible idea, and it is nothing but a money grab.

There is plenty of prime seating in Memorial Stadium without moving the student section.

Great job DIA!

You need to get your facts straight before you rip the DIA for moving the students. While I can certainly understand why students would upset, tell what you'd do if you were running the DIA? During the renovation thousands of donors and long time season ticket holders will lose their seats on the west side...should we relocate them to the north endzone? There is a delicate balance between keeping donors and alumni happy and students happy and when you're doing a major renovation like Illinois is you can't please everyone.

Also, keep in mind that MOST student sections across the country are located in the endzone. They're in the endzone and Wisconsin and that doesn't keep it from being one of the toughest environments to play in. Maybe if we'd get more than half the Block I to show up, we'd have a better atmosphere.

Does money have something to do with this decision? Of course it does, but if you're running a business does it make sense to keep students, who are paying $17 per ticket in some of the highest priced seats, while donors are sent to the end zone?

Now let's break down your brilliant questions...

<1) Why is the DIA giving University of Illinois students the worst seats in the stadium?>
FALSE - are they worse seats than where the Block I has been? Yes, but are they the worst in the house, not by a longshot.

<2) Why are visiting fans presumably getting better seats than the student body?>
False, the visiting seats on the very southwest corner of the stadium are much worse seats than the new north endzone seats. Just sit that and watch game from row 5 of section SS (where the visitors sit) and tell me they're not horrible seats?

<3) How will a set of bleachers going to be able to hold the entire student demand for tickets?>
FALSE - maybe you haven't heard, but they're renovating memorial stadium. The bleachers that are there now will be gone and replaced by a permanent grandstand

<4) How will this create a unified student section if Illinois actually starts winning and 10,000 students will want to show up per game?>
It won't be any different than it is now. All the students will be in one unified area just like they are now.

<5) Moving the students from right behind the opposing bench, to an isolated corner of the stadium and 15' off the ground (because of the ridiculous glass rooms at field level in the horseshoe) is a horrible idea, and it is nothing but a money grab.>
What does the horseshoe have to do with anything??? And if you've ever sat in the endzone anywhere before you'd know that they're not bad seats if you sit high. Low endzone seats are terrible and don't allow you to see the game.

Oh where to begin, anonymous relative of Ron Guenther?

1) The students are NOT unified now. The fraternity/sorority blocks do NOT sit in Block I now.

2) I would TEMPORARILY move the students from Block I until the West Balcony work is done. The DIA donors who are in West Balcony can sit in Block I. When the renovations are complete, move them back to their previous seats. Those whose seats are lost in the renovation will have top priority to sit where they want in the newly renovated MS (within their DIA donation levels).

3) The endzone seats are not good seats if you are seated low, and are not good seats when the play is at the other end of the stadium.

Good to see that you do recognize this was a brilliant move. Good to see some fairness coming from you.
