Why Can't Illinois Be Consistently Good In Football?

The easy answer: Ron Guenther. 5 bowl games in 17 years, no back to back winnning seasons when he's been the athletic director.

If you want to lay it at the feet of the AD, you would have to mention every AD in Illinois history post George Huff.

If you were asking the question in earnest, that would be an interesting discussion.

"- Illinois made the Top 25 ... in merchandise sales. According to the Collegiatate Licensing Company, Illinois was 19th in sales from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009."

"University of Illinois Chancellor Richard Herman was quoted in July, 2006 as saying: "If he's not the best AD in the country, I want to know who is." and "He does a wonderful job of bringing in great coaches and building a team that understands what athletics is and needs to be about."

Illinois has their top finish ever in the Director's Cup

"The University of Illinois athletic department achieved great success in the 2008-09 season, which is reflected in the Fighting Illini's school-record 20th-place finish out of 271 schools in the 2009 Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings. Illinois was led by a fifth-place finish from the men's gymnastics team and an eighth-place standing by the wrestling squad in their respective national tournaments. Illinois' previous best finishes in the Directors' Cup standings were a pair of 25th-place finishes earlier this decade.

In addition to the top finishes by the men's gymnastics and wrestling teams, women's gymnastics earned 64.5 points with its 12th-place finish, while volleyball, women's soccer and men's tennis all earned 64 points. Women's track scored 63.75 points by finishing 12th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and women's cross country notched 60 points by placing 10th.

Five Big Ten schools finished in the top 20, with Michigan ranking fifth, Ohio State placing 10th, Minnesota finishing 14th and Penn State placing 19th. In all, 10 Big Ten institutions ranked in the top 50 and all finished in the top 55 in the nation."

"CHAMPAIGN Given that Illinois' football revenue has fallen more than $1 million the last four years, you would think the school's athletic department would be hurting financially.

On the contrary, Illinois has a balanced budget and is far along in a building fund that is approaching $30 million. It also has added two women's sports, soccer and softball, to move close to complying with the Title IX federal mandate to provide equal opportunities for athletes of both sexes.

That's a big improvement over the $1.7 million deficit Ron Guenther inherited when he became Illinois' athletic director in 1992.."

5 bowl games in 17 years. 78-117-2. And the self-proclaimed "Football Guy" has the nerve to call Warren Carter an idiot?

Did Ron Guenther schedule that SAT in Detroit for Derrick Rose as part of the Western Michigan debacle?

"I would like to thank Ron Guenther and the entire athletic department for giving me the great opportunity to fulfill my dream of leading the Fighting Illini," Johnson said. "I couldn't have asked for a better athletic director than Ron. I want to thank him for how he treated my program and me over my 17 years here. I really enjoyed the relationships with my athletes and staff, and I think this program is in great shape for the future."
